Topic: Meditating with Emotions in Difficult Situations — Deepening Session

Deepening sessions focus on integrating the principles and practices presented in the previous opening session with daily life and on refining one's experience in meditation. Sessions start and end with a 10 minute meditation period. The middle period of each session features short experiential exercises, video teachings by Mingyur Rinpoche, and/or practices designed to link meditation with daily life. These sessions also feature short periods of small- and large-group discussion.

When faced with challenging situations, our emotions take over and it becomes more difficult to differentiate our interpretation of an event from the event itself. The story we create around an experience often persists long after the situation ends, consuming a tremendous amount of mental energy and creating stress in the body and mind. By bringing awareness to our reactions, we begin to see that we are much more than our thoughts and feelings. In the midst of emotionally charged situations, awareness itself can provide us with a sense of calm, even while the waves of powerful emotions rage on the mind’s surface.

In this nine-session series, we will explore the practice of using emotions as a support for mindful awareness. Below you will find more information on the topics we will be meditating on, as well as suggested weekly readings from Mingyur Rinpoche's books, meditation instructions for use in daily practice, and links to useful online teachings

Suggested Reading: Joy of Living, pp.11-14; 21-24

You can download and print the Session Handout with suggested reading and daily meditation practices here. Each week, we explore Mingyur Rinpoche's teachings with the support and guidance of a comprehensive meditation group curriculum based on Mingyur Rinpoche's books, The Joy of Living and Joyful Wisdom. The curriculum covers the core teachings of the Joy of Living program and includes guided meditations, experiential exercises and questions for group.

This event is offered freely and at no-cost, however donations are warmly welcome and accepted here.

There are no pre-requisites to attend, and no ongoing commitment is required. All practitioners are welcome to drop-in and out as needed.
