Topic: Meditating with Emotions in Difficult Situations — Practice Session
Practice sessions provide an opportunity to focus on the meditation practices presented in each section of the meditation group curriculum. Each session alternates between periods of sitting and walking meditation, Practice sessions usually do not include any group discussion or teachings.
When I began to practice meditation on compassion, I found that my sense of isolation began to diminish, while at the same time my personal sense of empowerment began to grow. Where once I saw only problems, I started to see solutions. Where once I viewed my own happiness as more important than the happiness of others, I began to see the well-being of others as the foundation of my own piece of mind.
Over the next few weeks, we will explore the practice of compassion meditation, learning how to open our hearts to the world around us and relax the self-centered tendencies that lead to anxiety, dissatisfaction, and suffering. Cultivating compassion helps us to see the basic goodness that all beings share. By relating to others in an open-hearted way, we bring peace to the mind and develop a sense of confidence and purpose. This, in turn, naturally brings harmony to our relationships and enables us to work with challenging situations more effectively.
